The Forum will focus on numerous material options in reinforcement and prestressing, code changes, industry critical research results, as well as the potential roles of computer visioning/artificial intelligence and robotics in the concrete industry. The following presentations are planned:

  • Reinforcement – 2-hour panel on the use of non-metallic reinforcement from the viewpoints of owner, manufacturer, contractor and academia. Speakers will discuss the state of research & development, activities by ACI, ASTM and AASHTO; as well as constructability, productivity and risk;
  • Technology Showcases - using titanium to strengthen bridges and existing concrete structures; basalt and alkali resistant glass macrofibers for precast concrete; and carbon fiber composites;

  • Future Trends & Inventions – potential applications of computer visioning/artificial intelligence, robotics and augmented reality;

The City of Pittsburgh is currently undergoing a post-industrial reinvention. Advances in robotics and other cutting-edge technologies are the result of research by Carnegie Mellon University’s Manufacturing Futures Initiative (MFI) and the Advanced Robotic Manufacturing Institute. Come discuss how these technologies might affect the future of concrete and the built environment. Then use the remainder of the day on Thursday, August 29, 2019 to network or connect with several start-up companies focused on bringing new technologies to the market.

The Frick Environmental Center, an ACI Pittsburgh Chapter Project, won second place in the Low-Rise Buildings Category during the 2017 ACI Concrete Excellence Awards.
