Stehly Memorial Hockey Game Coming to Detroit

Farmington Hills, Mich. (February 6, 2017) The fifth annual Richard D. Stehly Memorial Hockey Game will take place at 7:00 pm on Monday, March 27, at the Dearborn Ice Skating Center in Dearborn, Michigan. This installment of the game is organized by the Greater Michigan Chapter – ACI and coincides with The ACI Concrete Convention and Exposition in Detroit this spring, March 26-30, 2017.

The Stehly Game has become an annual tradition due to the effort and commitment of ACI members, many of whom are hockey aficionados, to honor the legacy of former ACI President Dick Stehly. Stehly believed that investing in ACI’s youngest members was crucial for both the future of the concrete industry and ACI; this conviction lead him to bequest a portion of his estate to fund future ACI Foundation scholarships and fellowships.

Stehly was an avid hockey player, often organizing games for ACI members to participate in during conventions. Upon his passing friends and colleague of Stehly’s decided that the creation of a memorial game to raise funds for student scholarships would be the ideal way to honor his legacy. Last year’s game was sponsored by the Wisconsin Chapter — ACI during The Concrete Convention and Exposition – Spring 2016 in Milwaukee. “I’m glad to see this event progressing into a formal tradition,” stated Nick Popoff, ACI member and organizer of this year’s game. “Raising money for students and lacing up our skates is the best way to honor Dick. I hope this event can be passed local chapter to local chapter in a spirit of friendly competition.” Popoff hopes that the local sponsoring chapter for every ACI spring convention will raise more money than the previous sponsoring chapter.

The Greater Michigan Chapter – ACI encourages all who are able to attend come out to support this event. Bus trips are being organized to transport players and fans from the Renaissance Center to the rink and back at no charge. The event is free; however, in memory of former ACI President Dick Stehly, donations are appreciated. All funds raised by this event will help to fund the Richard D. Stehly Memorial Scholarship. To make sponsorship arrangements for your support, contact either Larry Sutter, Michigan Technological University (llsutter@mtu.edu) or Nick Popoff, St. Mary's Cement (nick.popoff@vcimentos.com). Your company can be directly invoiced by the GMC, who will compile the sponsorships into a single donation to the Richard D. Stehly Memorial Scholarship fund in the name of the Greater Michigan Chapter – ACI . Additionally, donation forms will be available onsite.

The Richard D. Stehly Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually through the ACI Foundation to an outstanding student enrolled in an undergrad degree program studying concrete with an emphasis on structural design, materials, or construction. The ACI Foundation was established to promote progress, innovation, and collaboration through research and scholarships like the Richard D. Stehly Memorial Scholarship.
